Welcome to the Crossing!

Everybody’s got roots, family, community. Our community’s roots are in the Episcopal Church. We are, after all, based in a cathedral.

You don’t need to be Episcopal to be part of The Crossing, or even to hang out in the bishop’s chair (it’s surprisingly cozy). But don’t be surprised that we keep alive and celebrate (and often tussle with and riff on) ancient church traditions. Jazz artists have been doing it for generations. Now we’re doing it with church.

So yes, like other Episcopal communities, we’re in a lively conversation with the historic church (often critical, always faithful). We’ve got a priest (though we think of her has our lead organizer, facilitating everybody’s ministry and journey). We glory in the beauty of language and the beauty of creation and dig worship that hits all five senses (think incense, poetry and funk). We're not afraid of questions and we don't panic when different people come up with different answers to the same question (actually, we like it). We believe God speaks in scripture (we also believe God speaks in the prayer and wisdom of a homeless man). We believe the incarnation – God coming into the world in Christ – changes all the rules, makes anything possible, frees us all to live like children of God.

And we are passionate about gathering EVERYBODY at God’s table for Eucharist – the communion meal when all the outcasts and incasts come together just as we are to meet God, receive new life through Christ, and then head into the world as his hands and feet and arms embracing and transforming the world.
